Fraud Alert: How to Protect Yourself from Phone and Text Scams

Stay Safe: Recognizing and Avoiding Phone and Text Scams

Cybercriminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their attempts to steal personal and financial information. Recently, banks and credit unions across the country have seen a rise in fraud attempts involving phone calls and text messages that appear to come from legitimate financial institutions.

At MyPoint Credit Union, your security is a top priority. We want to help you recognize these scams and know what to do if you're ever contacted by someone claiming to represent a financial institution.

How These Scams Work

Fraudsters are using a tactic known as phone number spoofing, which allows them to make calls and text messages appear as though they are coming from a trusted source, including a bank or credit union.

In many cases, scammers claim there is suspicious activity on your account and create a sense of urgency to convince you to share personal information. They may ask you to verify details such as your address, card information, login credentials, or security codes.

Because the communication may appear to come from a legitimate phone number, it can be difficult to recognize that it's a scam.

What MyPoint Will Never Ask For

To help protect your accounts, remember that MyPoint will never call, text, or email you and ask for:

  • Your CVV or card security code
  • Your full debit or credit card number
  • The last eight digits of your debit or credit card number
  • One-time passcodes or authentication codes
  • Online or mobile banking passwords
  • Secure access codes sent by text or email
If anyone contacts you requesting this information, treat it as a red flag.

What To Do If You Receive a Suspicious Call or Text

If you receive an unexpected call, text message, or email asking for personal or account information:

  1. Do not provide any information.
  2. Do not click on links or open attachments.
  3. Stop responding or hang up immediately.
  4. Contact MyPoint directly using a phone number you know is legitimate.
  5. Report the incident to us as soon as possible.
Taking these steps can help prevent unauthorized access to your accounts and personal information.

When in Doubt, Verify

Scammers rely on trust and urgency. If something doesn't feel right, take a moment to verify the request through an official channel before taking any action.

Even if the phone number or text message appears to come from MyPoint, never share sensitive information unless you initiated the contact and are certain you are communicating with a legitimate representative.

Think You May Have Shared Information?

If you believe you may have provided sensitive information to a scammer, or if you notice unusual activity on your account, contact MyPoint immediately at 1-888-495-3400.

The sooner you report suspicious activity, the sooner we can help protect your account.
