Acceptable Forms of Identification
- Passport
- Green Card
- Any other government-issued document evidencing nationality, or residence, and bearing a photograph
- Examples of acceptable forms of Personal Identification Document (PDI), also referred to as Documento Personal de Identificación:
- Mexican nationals have a Matricular Consular Identificación
- Salvadoran nationals have a Documento Único de Indentidad (DUI)
- Guatemalan nationals have a Documento Personal de Identificación (DPI)
- Venezuelan nationals have a Carnet de la Patria
- Mexican nationals have a Matricular Consular Identificación
How to Apply for an ITIN
The IRS started the ITIN program in 1996, issuing SSN alternatives to foreign-born persons regardless of their immigration status. To apply for an ITIN, visit the Internal Revenue Service (irs.gov).
